Along the way I kept running into the same problem: almost no one around me seemed to want what I wanted. I've never been able to do routine. School felt like a jail I kept walking out of. Careers, honeymoons, five-year plans — the vocabulary never stuck. What I wanted, since I was a kid, was simple and total: to love deeply, to feel everything, to live wide awake instead of half-asleep. I didn't know a word for that kind of person. I just knew most people weren't it. The first time I saw it in someone, I was young - my uncle, my mother's brother, who ran his own business, broke every rule people expected him to follow, and still seemed genuinely happy, genuinely alive. He was the first proof I had that you didn't need to shrink yourself to be okay. The second time was Bob Dylan. I discovered him in 2012, before I knew anything about who he was — not the legend, not the history, just a feeling that hit me like a current: this person is like me. I didn't need to change myself to fit into a world I hadn't even entered yet. If he could make a life out of being unapologetically himself, so different from everyone around him, maybe I could too.
